Students are to complete each 2-part Book Write-up typed on a single sheet using paragraph/sentence format.
- Book Summary: Write a 7-10 sentence summary for each book you read.
- Analytical Response: Write a character analysis, author’s style analysis, theme analysis, or plot analysis in not less than 10 sentences for each book write-up.
Each analysis must consist of 10 or more sentences!
- Character analysis: Write the name of a major character. List 10 words that describe him or her. Use each word bolded or underlined in a sentence, explaining why you chose it (Use one word in each sentence).
- Theme analysis: Describe the message of the book in a single word (Example: perseverance, courage, humor, faith, ambition, change, etc.). Explain which one word best captures the lesson to be learned from the book. Then write a 10+ sentence paragraph explaining your theme choice. There are other possible theme words.
** Do not use a theme word unless you are able to adequately support it in writing a theme analysis! - Plot analysis: After reading a book completely, share your impressions about its title? Is it right on target? Does it provide a valuable clue to the story line? Write a 10+ sentence paragraph that analyzes the book title, providing evidence that the title is more than appropriate. If you do not feel that the title is suitable, create an alternate title and explain why yours is better. Cite events from the book as proof.
- Author’s style analysis: Talented authors resemble builders and architects, having the ability to craft great books from the building blocks of great sentences. Browse through the book to find and record 3 sentences that highlight examples of humorous, mature, and sophisticated language, or figurative language. Next, write 10 or more sentences to explain and analyze the 3 selected sentences based on the use of humor, mature language, and or figurative language (similes, metaphors, irony, personification, etc.) in each sentence.
